This volume originates in the lectures on contemporary
Spanish architecture held in Houston, Dallas and New Orleans in 1992, extended
in 1996 for the course as Cullinan Professor at Rice University, as well
as in the text about our 20th century written in 1991 for the I Biennial
of Spanish Architecture, revised in 1996 for an essay in The Dictionary
of Art and again in 1999 for a chapter of Modern Spanish Culture.
The result of these modest efforts to orchestrate the recent history of
our architecture was a detailed outline where the most significant works
were grouped in thematic pairs, thereby serving as an excuse to link the
main events of general history – political changes, economic cycles
and social mutations – with the more specific episodes of architecture
proper.
In reply to the invitation of Terence Riley to prepare a book or a monograph
that could be a historical complement to the MoMA exhibition then taking
shape, the outline was enriched with the suggestions of the authors who
accepted to participate in the project. To avoid repetitions, the essays
were chronologically arranged, dividing the 30 years passed since 1975
into six periods marked by significant events (the 23-F coup in 1981,
the EU entry in 1986, the Expo and Olympic Games in 1992, the change from
PSOE to PP in 1996, the Euro in 1999-2001). And aiming to deal with works
in one section, these were placed by year of completion, favoring reception
over conception, perhaps a fitting criterion for a project that favors
collective history over individual biographies.
The outline with the works in couples – occasionally increased
to threesomes, and in my own presentation of the Franco years to groups
of four to account for the length of the period –, that is printed
here on the black pages, helped the authors to prepare their initial drafts;
each author read that of the others and they were all discussed during
a work session held in Madrid. The final texts, as can be seen, orderly
follow the period structure – though some inevitably trespass on
adjacent sections – and duly refer to the selected works, though
not always following the suggested groups, resulting in a polyhedric and
perhaps stimulating view of the architectures built during the decades
of democracy, that serves as an introduction to the exhibit of the latest
works at the MoMA.
As in the New York exhibition, but with the advantage of historical perspective,
we present here a group of works that hope to represent the period described.
The final list of architects is headed by Moneo, followed by Calatrava,
Miralles, Oíza, Cruz & Ortiz, Navarro Baldeweg and Lapeña
& Torres. The regional coverage, for its part, is reasonably balanced,
with Catalonia and Madrid leading a list that includes all the autonomous
communities, in many cases with canonical works. It is true that some
of the projects are featured for their narrative value, that significant
authors have been left out, and that both the younger and the foreign
architects – main characters at the MoMA – are less represented.
But in any case the account hopes to be plausible, and is confident that
its choral nature shall not blur its profile.
