Álvaro Siza & Carlos Castanheira. From Porto to the East

31/03/2019

For years the field of action of Álvaro Siza (Matosinhos, 1933) has extended beyond the boundaries of his native Portugal, transferring the master’s ideas to a variety of contexts in Europe, America, and recently also Asia. It is in this latest stage that his close association with his compatriot Carlos Castanheira (Lisbon, 1957) has taken on full importance. They have collaborated intensely in projects like the Anyang Pavilion, the Mimesis Museum, the administration building for Shihlien Chemical, and the design for three works presented in these pages: a set of sculptural pavilions in South Korea, an art museum in China, and a mausoleum in Taiwan.
