AleaOlea, Church in Vilanova de la Barca (Lleida)

The Gothic church of Santa María de la Barca, dating back to the 13th century, was much destroyed by bombings in 1936, at the start of the Spanish Civil War. All that remained were the front part of the temple, fragments of the naves, and the facade. This state of ruin continued until the recent consolidation and restoration, thanks to which it has been possible to restore the building as a multipurpose center.

Besides the repair of very damaged original ashlar stone walls, the intervention centered on the facade and roof. The project provides a new enclosure consisting of two layers, and covers the entire enclosed space with a pitched roof, so the whole construction is like a ceramic shell delicately perched on what is left of the original walls. The outer layer is an opaque lattice that works as a backdrop reproducing the irregular finish of the ashlars, engaging in dialogue with the original masonry and giving the complex a visual continuity. The inner layer is lighter, presenting an abstract bond of brick, perforated and whitewashed, which, acting in conjunction with the metal ceiling, strikes a contrast with the medieval walls. As a result, the outside reestablishes the church’s old volume, and the inside manages to preserve the atmosphere of introspection that surely prevailed in the sacred space centuries ago.
