Peter Zumthor, extension of Fondation Beyeler in Riehen (Switzerland)
Peter Zumthor has unveiled his project for the extension of the Fondation Beyeler in the city of Riehen, in Switzerland’s canton of Basel-Stadt. The museum, which opened in 1997, was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano to house the modern and contemporary art collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler. Since then the building has received over 6.5 million visitors and the collection has doubled in size. The necessary enlargement will be executed on the acquired adjoining Iselin-Weber Park. The Swiss architect integrates three new buildings into the historical gardens: a volume for services and administration, a glass pavilion for cultural events, and a ‘House for Art’ with 1,500 square meters of exhibition galleries on three floors. The design will be on view from 10 to 23 May at Riehen City Hall.
