Mies Award 2017: deFlat Kleiburg in Amsterdam, by NL and XVW

The project for the renovation of the deFlat Kleiburg residential complex in Amsterdam, by the Dutch firms NL Architects and XVW architectuur, has won the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award, given every two years with a money prize of 60,000 euros, and with the aim of distinguishing the quality of European architectural production. With its 500 units, length of 400 meters, and 11 floors, this construction of gridded facades is one of the largest apartment blocks in the Netherlands. Because of the bad state it was in, a competition to renovate it was organized in 2011. The main structure has been refurbished but intervention was minimized, leaving the living units unfinished – without kitchens, showers, and bedrooms – in order to reduce costs and enable residents to personalize their homes. The other four finalists in the competition are: the Ely Court apartments in London, by Alison Brooks; the Kannikegården building in Ribe (Denmark), by Lundgaard & Tranberg; the Katyn Museum in Warsaw, by BBGK Architekci y the Memorial Museum at the Camp de Rivesaltes , by Rudy Ricciotti. Besides the five works shortlisted, the competition jury chaired by Stephen Bates has awarded the Emerging Architect award – coming with 20,000 euros – to the Brussels practices MSA and V+, for their Navez social housing development in the municipality of Schaerbeek (Belgium). The awarding ceremony will be held on 26 May in Barcelona, at Mies van der Rohe’s pavilion.
