Alejandro Aravena to build a cultural center in Doha (Qatar)

Elemental, the Chilean practice headed by Alejandro Aravena, has won the Art Mill International Design Competition, organized to transform Qatar’s largest flour factory into a complex dedicated to art. The 83,500-square-meter site is at the center of the country’s capital, close to the Museum of Islamic Art, a work of I. M. Pei, and the National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel and currently under construction. Eight entries were selected out of 489 submitted, the other seven shortlisted being those by Adam Khan Architects (United Kingdom), Atelier Bow-Wow (Japan), EAA Emre Arolat Architecture (Turkey), junya.ishigami + associates (Japan), Mangado y Asociados (Spain), Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Italy), and Rice+Lipka Architects (USA). The cultural center program includes exhibition galleries, classrooms, and venues for miscellaneous events, and the design incorporates huge existing silos, reinterpreting them through the repetition of new vertical elements conceived as cooling towers. Construction is to begin in 2019.
