Virseda-Vila + Jaraíz + Arbau win competition in Vernier (Switzerland)
The team formed by Madrid-based Virseda Vila Arquitectos, José Jaraíz, and Arbau Arquitectos has won first place in the competition for ideas for a cultural center and accommodations for students in Vernier, a city of the Swiss canton of Geneva. Its design carried the day over 45 other entries. An existing green lane for cyclists had to be incorporated into the project, resulting in the splitting of the triangular lot into two parts: the south for the residential and the north for the cultural program. With a built floor area approaching 26,000 square meters, the complex is organized in four main volumes, with smaller pieces placed in between and containing vertical circulation elements. Conceived upon an orthogonal grid, the project fragments into prismatic objects with ventilated facades of glass, adapting in this way to the scale of the surrounding constructions.
