The Postgraduate Studies Center at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in Palma has recently received the first prize in the Public or Collective Buildings category of the Architecture Awards of Mallorca. The awards are convened by the Architect’s Association of the Balearic Islands, and go to works completed between 2014 and 2016. Designed by Antonio Barceló and Bárbara Balanzó, the budget for the construction of the building was 3.743.740 euros. With an area of 3.255 square meters, the two-story volume reduces its visual impact along the southern side by staggering its facade. Besides, on this side three courtyards filter sunlight and establish a relationship with the surroundings. The prefabricated construction, with a minimum module of 50 square meters and a maximum bay of 14 meters – for the classrooms – provides flexibility for future extensions.
