Since 1997 the Dutch foundation called the Prince Claus Fund has annually honored individuals and organizations for groundbreaking work in the fields of culture and development, with emphasis on contributions in places where resources are limited. In the latest cycle, the Principal Prince Claus Award went to two: the documentary filmmaker Vicent Carelli (São Paulo, Brazil) and the new media designer and environmentalist Ma Jun (Qingdao, China). The five other laureates are: the architect Diébédo Francis Kéré (Burkina Faso), the documentary filmmaker and women’s rights activist Khadja Al-Salami (Yemen), the art collective L’Art Rue (Tunisia), the environmental scientist and gender diversity activist Brigitte Baptists (Colombia), and the visual artista and social activist Amar Kanwar (India).
