New Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Terminal

The Spanish-Dutch team formed by the architectural practices of Lamela and Kaan, in collaboration with the engineering offices Ineco and ABT, has won the competition to expand Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, carrying the day over co-finalists HOK, MVRDV, OMA, SOM, and UNStudio. Containing a built area of 100,500 square meters, the new terminal seeks to integrate into the airport complex with breadth of space, simplicity of form, and abundant intake of natural light. Based on modular repetition, the structure makes it possible to raise the building’s central part over the access level, forming a ‘plateau’ with views of the entrance hall clad with a large lattice. The roof, spanning 180 x 150 meters, rests on a structural facade that incorporates large panes of glass. Construction work is to begin in 2020, for competion in 2023.
