Aranguren & Gallegos, Oak House in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid)

For a clearing in the pine forest of the southern slope of Monte Abantos, in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the Madrid practice of María José Aranguren and José González Gallegos has designed a private dwelling with privileged views of the plain that stretches from the Guadarrama Mountains all the way down to the city of Madrid. Indeed the house is thought out as a large lookout, open and glazed. To rise on a budget of 1,220,000 euros, the building will contain 450 square meters on two levels connected by a concrete slab: the upper one, very permeable, is for the more public areas; the lower one, tucked into the rock, will shelter the bedrooms and open on to the south with porches and windows.
