El proyecto PLANTA se presenta en Chicago

Promoted by Sorigué and its foundation, the PLANTA project of the Madrid-based architectural firm Ábalos + Sentkiewicz will be presented at the second Chicago Architecture Biennial, open from 15 September to 7 January 2018.

Located in the company’s industrial complex in Balaguer, in eastern Spain’s Lleida province, the building seeks to be a crossroads where art, science, architecture, landscaping, knowledge, and business are devoted to innovation and research. The prestigious art collection of the Sorigué Foundation will be exhibited here, with spaces adapted specially to display works by Chiharu Shiota, Bill Viola, Juan Muñoz, and more.

Containing a floor area of 7,500 square meters and executed with material from the gravel bed it rises on, the construction will act like a ‘thermal machine,’ regulating radiation, lighting, and ventilation to create an efficient and sustainable thermodynamic system. In the words of Ábalos + Sentkiewicz, it is a “careful equation of form, matter, and flow that will create a building which is 100% autonomous.”

On 30 October PLANTA opens its doors with a sculptural installation by Juan Muñoz (1953–2001): Double Bind. This will be its first time to be put on view in Spain since its 2001 presentation in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London. It will be placed in a large, 2,200-square-meter shed of industrial origins, duly adapted to accommodate this artwork.
