The official opening of Francisco Mangado's Convention Center and Hotel in Palma de Mallorca is set for 25 September. Stretching almost 500 meters, the huge building sits on a site of irregular geometry, very elongated, and strikes a visual dialogue with the sea and the urban fabric.
Fruit of an international competition held in 2005, Francisco Mangado’s building began to go up in 2008 but construction work was suspended from 2012 to 2014, leaving a skeleton of reinforced concrete. Completed without increases in the budget, a single volume on a set-back stone base contains an ambitious functional program combining a nine-floor hotel, two auditoriums seating 300 and 2,000, and a zone for exhibitions.
The exterior is defined by broken lines – with 4-meter-deep pieces providing protection against harsh sunlight – and the contrast of materials: sandstone in the rear facade and very light and resistant Alusion aluminum foam in the main facade.
