MVRDV completes public library in Tianjin (China)

A work of the Dutch firm MVRDV in collaboration with the local  office TUPDI, this 33,700-square-meter library for 1.2 million books opened recently in the Binhai district of Tianjin, a coastal municipality in western China, three years after the first drawing was made. Curved shelves cascade from the ceiling to the floor around a spherical auditorium, interspersed by stairs and seats. The underground level contains service spaces, book storage, and a large archive. On the ground floor are reading rooms, the main entrance, and the auditorium. The first and second floors mainly present reading rooms, while the upper two stories offer meeting, computer, and audio rooms besides offices.
