dRMM, Hastings Pier (England)

The Royal Institite of British Architects (RIBA) recently bestowed the Stirling Prize on Hastings Pier, a work by dRMM, the London practice headed by Alex de Rijke, Philip Marsh, and Sadie Morgan. Built in 1872 in Hastings, a town in East Sussex, on England’s southern coast, facing the English Channel, the pier was was a popular venue for musical events but had suffered serious neglect and been closed down in 2008, after a storm wrought further damages, and in 2010 a fire destroyed it altogether.

The RIBA took advantage of the situation to organize an international competition for the pier’s regeneration. The firm dRMM carried the day with a design that proposed restoring and strengthening the 19th-century iron structure hidden beneath the roof, converting one of the existing constructions into a glazed open-plan café, raising a new building at the center of the pier, with a roof offering views of both the canal and the coast, and turning the platform into an uninterrupted flexible space for large concerts, markets, and public gatherings. The architects have used wood through and through, much of it salvaged from the original facility.
