ETSAM architects in five teams win LagargeHolcim Awards 2017

Five teams made up of graduates of the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM) have been honored with this year’s LafargeHolcim Awards, considered the most important in the field of sustainable construction.

In the Latin America region, the team of Paula Montoya, with Javier Alonso, Juan Escudero, Marta Peña, and Ester Corral, all of them former students of the same Madrid university, have received a mention for the prototype of a temporary surgical hospital in rural areas, conceived as a hybrid between prefabrication and local construction in Nicaragua.

Ana Castillo and her colleagues in the Belgian firm TETRA architecten have carried the day in the Europe region with a structure for collecting wastes adaptable to future conditions, for insertion in the urban fabric of Brussels. In the same continental category, another mention has gone to an ecological landscaping intervention for the reconversion of Galician-Roman archaeological ruins in Pontevedra, by Joaquín Pérez-Goicoechea’s firn AGi Architects.

The other two architects trained in Madrid’s architecture school, Elena Brunete and Débora Mesa, have participated as collaborators in the teams CatalyticAction and MIT, respectively. The former takes home the Bronze in the Middle East and Africa region, thanks to an intelligent project for reusing the Expo Milano 2015 ‘Save the children’ pavilion as a school in Libya’s El Marj refugee camp. And finally, a neighborhood that integrates housing with work by giving a Colombian community economic prospects has earned a Latin American mention for the latter.
