Guilherme Machado Vaz, Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos (Portugal)

In Matosinhos, a city in the Porto district, a new space for research on architecture and its dissemination  recently opened. The local practice of Guilherme Machado Vaz was commissioned to refurbish an industrial complex in the old Real Vinícola winery – built between 1897 and 1901 and eventually abandoned – and turn it into a Portuguese Center for Architecture. To bring back the original project as much as possible, the external volume of the old winery was restored, wooden elements were preserved, and frames were reconstructed. On the other hand, in compliance with current fire protection regulations, the concrete stairwell was placed towards the exterior and more windows were opened along the south facade, always with a contemporary language that engages in dialogue with the original architecture. The new facilities include large exhibition halls, an auditorium, and space for the institution’s important archive, which currently holds about 500 documents (models, panels, drawings, serigraphs, and books) belonging to Álvaro Siza, João Álvaro Rocha, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Fernando Távora, Souto de Moura, and more.
