Jorge Martín and Yukari Sakata at 16th Venice Biennale

The Spanish architect Jorge Martín and the Japanese theater director Yukari Sakata are the authors of ‘Dear Gullivers,’ which will be on display in the Spanish Pavilion of the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, from 26 May to 25 November 2018. It presents a way to regard a place, not as a fixed, static entity but as a collection of interconnected narratives created in different space and time contexts and left open for endless evolution. The project was initiated in the Ritsurin Garden, in the city of Takamatsu (Japan). It involves introducing a story-generating apparatus in the form of a framework of chapters whose content is for the participants themselves to build by means of conversation. What the authors propose is not an interpretation of a place but to spark alternative possibilities: a medium, a structure neither neutral nor ever finished. Each technological device used to register and convey the proposal is part of the place-generating apparatus that the project puts forward. It is conceived to be always in transition, adapting to different environments, migrating in pursuit of the visual or textual suggestions that arise in the process. So far nine chapters have been developed between Takamatsu, London, and Dungeness: Origin, Encounter, Camouflage, Escape, Arrival, Exploration, Settlement, Contact, and Recruitment.
