Sou Fujimoto, spa in Pézenas (France)

The spa in Pézenas designed by the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto establishes a physicial and figurative link, through water and stone, with the heart of Pézenas, a commune in France’s Occitaine region. Conceived as a mineral space, with paths for contemplative walks, the project drew from two sources of inspiration. On the one hand, the importation from Japan of the simplicity, rapport with nature, and openness of the volcanic hot springs and baths called Onsen. On the other, the natural and mineral character of the narrow alleys of the old town of Pézenas. In this way, a spectacular inverted perforated dome is set along the Peyne River. Water, the main element of the spa, is present everywhere in the complex, from the entrance into the grounds to the various existing constructions that have been subtly renovated, and on to the actual spa. The baths are located at the center of the premises, limiting views of the exterior and intensifying engagement with the sky and the small spaces reserved for nature. Finally, the hotel – The Village – uses the shortcuts and narrow old streets of Pézenas as references, transforming then into promenades materialized with local limestone and interspersed with courtyards that offer a variety of atmospheres and degrees of relaxation.
