Dominique Perrault. National Library of France

In line with the 20th anniversary of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF), one of the most important public works of contemporary French architecture, Dominique Perrault has mounted an exhibition about its design. In 1989, at just 36 years of age, the French architect won the international competition for “one of the bigglest libraries in the world,” in the words of the then President of the Republic, François Mitterrand. It was a key project in Perrault’s career and the first example of subterranean (‘groundscape’) architecture, a central theme in the architect’s research work and urban theories.

On view through 22 July at the BNF François Mitterrand is ‘Dominique Perrault – The Bibliothèque nationale de France. Portrait of a Project 1988-1998,’ which presents the history of the building’s conception and construction. The show is divided into four sections incorporated into an original, large-scale open-plan scenography where meshes and screens hang and there are special lighting effects, in interaction with the architectural elements and furniture on display. Through original films, drawings, floor plans, and models selected from the architect’s archives and several public collections, the exhibition invites the visitor to discover the secrets behind the project in all its aspects, from its architecture and urban approach to the conception of the garden and the design of the furniture.
