Idom, building at University of Alioune Diop in Bambey (Senegal)

Located 120 kilometers west of Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is Bambey, a city short of urban infrastructures and services for its 20,000 inhabitants whose principal sources of income are peanut growing and livestock. Javier Pérez Uribarri and Federico Pardos Auber of the Spanish engineering and architecture firm IDOM, have designed a constructionally simple and repetitive classroom building that seeks to protect itself against the extreme climate of the Sahel zone, with alternating long periods of aridness and torrential rains, in a university campus where scarcity of resources is manifested particularly in the lack of sanitary networks, potable running water, and electricity. With a built surface area of 7,533 square meters, the building – besides classrooms – includes an amphitheater seating 500, laboratorios, and teachers’ offices. The design develops from the section, and the building is given an inclined double roof with a sandwich panel of sheet metal and insulation in the upper surface and a false ceiling of mineralized fibers inside. On the south, the roof stretches to a length of 10 meters, shading a large exterior space. On this side, the double facade is composed of blocks with triangular perforations, some 20,000 pieces of concrete poured on the site, artisanally, by unskilled locals. In the gap between the two skins is a garden of citronellas that keeps malaria-carrying mosquitoes out. Finally, to address the absence of sanitary networks, dinghies are incorporated to gather rainwater, and also a device for purifying mud formed by wastewater.
