elii, Save the Children foundation in Madrid

Headed by Uriel Fogué, Eva Gil, and Carlos Palacios, the Madrid firm elii has renovated and enlarged the Save the Children’s facilities in Madrid’s Vallecas district, specifically to address the NGO’s program of directly attending to the needs of children. In accordance with the project, winner of a closed competition, the building expands on top, through a double-height space that rises as much as is permitted. Part of the existing 1950s structure was torn down to give way to a new circulation core. The refurbished facade presents a system of eaves, canopies, and window boxes that together do much for thermal insulation and the regulation of sunlight. Through a play of spaces, materials, colors, and furniture elements, the interiors are designed with the express intention of building up children’s self-confidence, sense of responsibility, and camaraderie.
