Roger Grasas, PHE18 Discoveries Award

The Ha Aretz series by Roger Grasas (Barcelona, 1970) is the winner of the PHE18 Discoveries Award, having been deemed the best photography work among those presented in the past year by PhotoEspaña in Manila, Casablanca, and Madrid. The jury – Rein Deslé, Andrea Holzherr, and Ana Morales – has set great store by its coherence in language and its capacity to document a global problem in a highly personal way, highlighting its discourse and the editing of images. Ha Aretz is an expression taken from the language that Jesus Christ is generally believed to have spoken, Aramaic, literally meaning ‘the promised land.’ Carried out in the course of seven years (2010-2017) in seven countries (Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey), the project documents some of the oldest human settlements that have remained inhabited and where Biblical events took place, such as Jerusalem, Jericho, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Beirut, and Damascus. Grasas proposes a reflection on the possible evolution or involution of these ancestral places as they come under the dominance of technology, capitalism, mass tourism, or political conflicts.

His work will be exhibited in the next PhotoEspala festival.
