Lluís Alexandre Casanovas, Real Estate Boom House in Cardedeu

Through Real Estate Boom House, a research project, the architect Lluís Alexandre Casanovas seeks to address aesthetic, constructive, and economic questions raised by the architectures that arose during Spain’s property bubble. To be able to understand it and then appraise how much of it should be preserved, and how, the house at Bellavista 21 was studied. This one-family dwelling in village of Cardedeu, outside Barcelona, is for three reasons considered paradigmatic of the aesthetic fostered during the 1990s. First, the structure and the interiors reveal the period’s aspirations to opulence. Second, there is a clear effort, at any cost, to obtain the best views of the landscape. Third, there is an abundance of references, through decorative elements, to different periods of the past. The results of the analysis led to an intervention on the preexisting staircase that would highlight all three observations. Indoor plants are arranged to compensate for the lost visual connection with the landscape, and decorative elements and lighting fixtures are created using Castilian bobbin lacemaking techniques, but with high-resistance Dyneema fiber instead of cotton thread.
