Patrick Schweitzer & Associés, architecture school in Kigali (Rwanda)

Learn from what’s built. Such was the strategy pursued by the French studio of Patrick Schweitzer in designing the new faculty of architecture in Kigali, capital of Rwanda. After an analysis of the place and its history, up went a complex of two levels, in itself a pedagogical tool because of the local skills and resources used, including lava rock and rammed earth. In this way, students will be in direct contact with vernacular architectural tradition. The upper floors of the thirteen irregular prisms with orange roofs contain classrooms, while downstairs are laboratories, workshops, the auditorium, and administration, arranged around garden zones. Besides injecting respect for and intergration with building traditions into the design repertoire of new generations of architects, the project minimized impact on the environment during execution.
