Snøhetta, Powerhouse Brattørkaia in Trondheim (Norway)

A work of Snøhetta, the Oslo-based firm of Kjetil Trædal Thorsen and Craig Dyker, this office building produces more than twice the amount of electricity it consumes daily. Wrapped in almost 3,000 square meters of solar panels, it is designed to maximize exposure to the sun – in a northern location where daylight hours are minimal – and in this way obtain approximately 500,000 kilowatts of clean and renewable energy. Adopting sustainable strategies, the 18,000-square-meter positive-energy construction presents a skewed pentagonal roof perforated by an atrium that serves as a public garden, besides efficient insulation, smart systems to adjust ventilation, and a concrete structure whose thermal mass helps regulate indoor temperature.

The project's objective is threefold: maximize the amount of clean energy harvested by the building, minimize the amount of energy required to run it, and create a pleasant space for its users.
