vaumm architects, renovation of Aircraft Carrier building in San Sebastián

The Basque firm vaumm has renovated the pavilion that Luis Tolosa built in 1943 at San Sebastián’s port. It was a storage for the wooden boxes used by the fishing fleet. Because of the cantilevered roof deck – where fishing nets were repaired, cleaned, and dried – the building was commonly called ‘the aircraft carrier.’

The aim of the project was to restore the original structure, which in the 1980s had undergone transformations to accommodate new uses. Elements that blurred the initial design are now gone, and volumes recalling the stacks of wooden boxes have been added. Beside storage for fishing activity, there are new spaces for the nautical services of Euskadi Kirol Portuak as well as for OPEGI (Guipúzcoa Organization of Inshore Fishing Producers).

Executed in collaboration with the company Cerámicas Cumella, the new claddings present tiles measuring 18 x 40 centimeters, with reliefs and as many as six variations in white tones and a combination of matte and gloss finishes. This hard, highly resistant material abounds in the facades of the fishermen's homes nearby. On the other hand, the white color evokes the Royal Yacht Club just a hundred meters away. The facade is independent of the roof and the original frame. Vertical lattices have been installed in the spaces that need more daylight and also more privacy.
