Architecture Club, Atelier Monika Sosnowska in Warsaw (Poland)

This atelier for the Polish sculptor Monika Sosnowska is the first built work of the Swiss firm Architecture Club, set up in 2017 by Karolina Slawecka (Warsaw, 1980) and Pawel Krzeminski (Warsaw, 1981), who had previously worked in the offices of Peter Zumthor and Herzog & de Meuron, respectively.

Two volumes rise beside Sosnowska’s house in the Polish capital. The smaller one is a wooden storage shed, and the other a concrete-and-glass studio that stands 5.6 meters on a 12 x 12 m footprint. The driving force of the design was the idea of a large space, bare and flexible, for the artist to be able to experiment undistracted in. Natural light abounds thanks to the two glass facades: translucent on the south to blur outside activity and provide privacy; transparent on the north for a clear view of the garden. Timber furniture forms a core for a small toilet and a kitchen. Along the north facade, parallel to it, stretches a 6-meter-long work table made of oakwood. On the south, a long, 12-meter terrazzo bench levels the atelier up to the street. All elements are handcrafted, many of them welded on site by the same artisans Sosnowska habitually works with on her pieces.
