OMA, SNCB headquarters in Brussels

The design that won the 2018 competition to turn three buildings on Fonsny Avenue, by the Brussels-South train station, into new offices for the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges, Belgium’s national railway company, has been unveiled. With a total area of 75,000 square meters, the scheme submitted by Rem Koolhaas’s firm OMA, with Reinier de Graaf as project leader and in collaboration with Jaspers-Eyers Architects, tries to bring all SNCB departments – with 4,000 employees – together in a single complex. The operation renovates the three brick constructions – built on the occasion of the 1958 World’s Fair and now to be feature rooftop gardens – and adds an 11-story, 236-meter-long volume whose glass facade will present circular perforations.
