Makin Molowny Portela, Valle San Lorenzo Pavilion in Arona

In the southern part of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, stands this municipal pavilion built by the local practice of Rodrigo Makin, Javier Molowny, Fernando Portela, and Alberto A. Portela.  The covered space is a venue for sporting activities, but also for a range of other events. The building is oriented in a north-south direction on sloping ground, so a single-level module on the east side contains the changing rooms, and a two-floor module to the north harbors service and multipurpose areas, besides the yoga and pilates room upstairs, which overlooks the indoor court.

In the envelope of blocks, clad uninterruptedly in gray anthracite, 9-meter-tall pillars of exposed concrete stand out. The upper part is executed with a structure of 38.5-meter-long beams of laminated timber and sandwich panels. The curving metal roof stretches beyond the facade line.
