APROP Ciutat Vella in Barcelona

These temporary dwellings in the Catalonian capital’s old quarter form the first building raised under the auspices of Barcelona City Hall’s APROP program for provisional housing.

Carried out jointly by the Catalan firms straddle3 and Yaiza Terré estudi d’arquitectura, in collaboration with the Basque team Eulia Arkitektura, the design reuses shipping containers on municipal property to temporarily accommodate families ejected from the neighborhood. Using modular prefabrication, which makes for quick, economical, and sustainable execution, the compact corner volume boxed in by party walls harbors at ground level an extension of a nearby sanitary infrastructure, and in its four upper floors twelve living units – eight of them with two bedrooms, four of them with two. Presenting an external skin of translucent polycarobonate, the ventilated facades incorporate thermal insulation, contributing to the project’s energy efficiency.

APROR Ciutat Vella has been shortlisted in the Architecture section of the 2020 FAD Awards.
