Thom Mayne, AIA Gold Medal

The American Institute of Architects has bestowed on Thom Mayne its prestigious Gold Medal. On its 69th year, this award honors the work of professionals who have had a great influence on architectural theory and practice. Born in 1944 in Waterbury (Connecticut) and principal at the Californian firm Morphosis, Mayne is the author of the Caltrans District 7 headquarters for the California Department of Transportation in Los Angeles, the United States Federal Building in San Francisco and the new Cooper Union building in New York City, among others. In Spain he has built an apartment block in Carabanchel – in collaboration with Begoña Díaz-Urgorri – and he is responsible for the project being undertaken for Vigo’s high-speed railway station.
