Thomas Beeby, Driehaus Prize 2013

Thomas Beeby has been named the winner of the 11th annual Richard H. Driehaus Prize, a US$200,000 award given by the University of Notre Dame in Indiana since 2003. Born in 1941 in Oak Park (Illinois), Beeby was part of the group Chicago Seven in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1971 he set up HBRA with James Hammond. Combining professional practice with academe, he was a professor for six years at the Illinois Institute of Technology, director of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture, and dean of the Yale School of Architecture. In 1991 Beeby was elected member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. The jury of this year’s Driehaus – Adele Chatfield-Taylor, Robert Davis, Paul Goldberger, Léon Krier, Demetri Porphyrios and Witold Rybczynski – bestows the prize in acknowledgment of Beeby’s contribution to promoting the principles of classical architecture through works like the recently completed Courthouse in Tuscaloosa (Alabama). He will accept the award in a ceremony to be held in Chicago on 23 March 2013. Previous winners include Robert Stern, Michael Graves, Leon Krier and the Spanish architect Rafael Manzano Martos.
