Alberto Campo Baeza, Tessenow Medal 2013

In Hamburg today, Alberto Campo Baeza of Spain receives the Tessenow Gold Medal, an award instituted in 1963 in memory of Heinrich Tessenow (1876-1950) to honor architects who have achieved distinction for works characterized by sobriety. A native of Valladolid, Campo studied at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM), where he is a chair professor of design. He studied under Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza and Javier Carvajal and began his career in the office of Julio Cano Lasso. His buildings include the Blas House in Sevilla la Nueva and the Turégano House in Pozuelo de Alarcón, both in greater Madrid, the Gaspar House in Zahora (Cádiz), the BIT Center in Inca (Mallorca), the main banking offices of the Caja de Ahorros de Granada, and the more recent offices for the regional government of Castilla-León in Zamora. Previous winners of the Tessenow include Roger Diener, Eduardo Souto de Moura, David Chipperfield, Peter Zumthor, Peter Märkli and Juan Navarro Baldeweg. Earlier this month Campo was given the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid's Teaching Excellence Award, created to recognize the careers and academic dedication of the UPM's leading professors.
