Cruz y Ortiz win the competition for Lugano’s Cornaredo Stadium
The Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz, in collaboration with the local firm Giraudi Radczuweit, have won the competition for the renovation of Cornaredo Stadium in Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Under a single unifying roof, the Sevillian partners have designed the new sport complex for 15,000 spectators with an emphatic horizontal form organized along two axes: the main north-south line connecting the ice skating rink to the playing fields; and the east-west one slicing the latter to create four areas for the stadium, the pavilion, general services and offices. Construction will take place in phases and without interrupting activity in the existing stadium, home to FC Lugano. Second prize went to the Milan architect Antonio Citterio and third prize to the Barcelona office Bonell i Gill.
