Twelve teams to compete for the Nobel Foundation center in Stockholm

Twelve architectural practices have been selected, out of 142 from all over the world, to present their proposals for the Nobel Foundation’s new home in Stockholm. In this list of finalists are three Danish offices – BIG, 3XN and Lundgaard & Tranberg; two Swiss – Herzog & de Meuron and Meili & Peter; two Swedish – Johan Celsing and Gert Wingårdh; the French firm Lacaton & Vassal; the Dutch OMA, the Japanese SANAA; the Norwegian Snøhetta; and the British David Chipperfield. With a floor area of 20,000 square meters, the building will be the new venue of the Nobel Prize award ceremony, replacing for this purpose the two red volumes located at the port of the Swedish capital. It is to contain event halls, conference rooms, a library and a restaurant, cafeteria and store. Involving two phases and to end with six finalists and a winner, the competition is on hold until the bulk of the funds necessary for the project to be carried out is guaranteed. Construction is intended to begin in 2015 and it is hoped that the building will be ready in time for the award ceremony of December 2018.
