BIG vs. OMA: Miami Beach Convention Center redevelopment

There are only two finalists in the competition to redevelop the over 20 hectares of the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) district, Bjarke Ingels and Rem Koolhaas, whose firms, BIG and OMA, have presented their proposals for an overhaul of the convention premises, the construction of an 800-room hotel and the creation of a new residential neighborhood. The design submitted by the Danish office BIG – as part of the team Portman CMC, along with Portman Holdings, CMC Group, the studios John Portman, West 8 and Fentress Architects, and the Cirque du Soleil – revolves around a large public square, heart and connecting feature of the masterplan, with a green roof for the exhibition center that will generate huge spaces for diverse events. For its part, the project drawn up by the Dutch firm OMA – incorporated in the team South Beach ACE, along with the developers Tishman and UIA, the architects of TVSdesign, and the landscaping professionals MVVA and Raymond Jungles – places the hotel over the existing convention center, venue of the annual Art Basel-Miami Beach fair, which will be enlarged and reorganized, with emphasis on the south access as main entry. Green zones will be created to the north, as well as a hill covering parking area and spaces for loading and unloading. A year after the first submission of designs by eight teams, the second phase of the competition begins with these two finalist entries that until 21st June will be subjected to assessement by citizens.
