SANAA to build new Bezalel Academy campus in Jerusalem
SANAA unveiled its design for the new campus of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. The site is in one of the oldest quarters of the Israeli capital, in the Russian Compound between the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Museum of Underground Prisoners. The project enlarges the institution, founded in 1906, with a 37,000 square meter complex that the Japanese partners, in collaboration with the local studio Nir-Kutz Architects, have designed with the intention of connecting its eight separate departments. The classrooms are arranged in a stacked horizontal scheme that adapts to the topography of the place. Ramps and stairs sew the different levels together, opening on to terraces to let more natural light in. Conceived with the idea of fostering cultural and social development in Jesusalem’s historic center, the complex will also feature two auditoriums, workshops, exhibition galleries and cafés. Construction is scheduled to be finished by 2017.
