Rem Koolhaas’s team has been selected to raise a major mixed-use public building in downtown Santa Monica, a project aimed at contributing to the diverse network of public spaces in the Californian city. The proposal shows horizontal blocks stacked on top of one another at angles, and each will have a distinct use. The complex will include a public square, a cultural center, restaurants, stores, a venue for open-air markets, a hotel and a technological center. OMA’s design carried the day over that of the Danish firm of Bjarke Ingles (BIG), as in another competition held recently in the United States, for the Miami Beach Convention Center.
