Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill to design Expo 2017 site in Astana

The office of Adrian Smith + Gordon Hill (AS+GG) has won the competition to organize the site for Astana World Expo 2017. The American team’s entry was selected from among 45 coming from 20 countries, including from Zaha Hadid, Snøhetta, UNStudio, Mecanoo, gmp Architekten, Coop Himmelb(l)au, and EMBT (Enric Miralles, Benedetta Tagliabue). Awarded with an endowment of US$150,000 and covering 173 hectares of the Kazakhstani capital’s Esil district, the project consists of a central exhibition zone surrounded by housing developments, shopping centers, green zones, and cultural, educational, and health-care facilities. At the heart of the premises will rise the Kazakhstan Pavilion, a spherical volume with an area of 24,000 square meters. The proposal takes inspiration from the fair’s ‘Future Energy’ theme, applying renewable energy technologies and sustainability concepts to a design based on making all installations reusable and flexible. Building work is to begin in 2014.
