Linazasoro & Sánchez win ideas competition for Puerta del Sol

The Madrid Institute of Architects (COAM) has announced the winner of ‘Piensa Sol’(‘Think Sol’), the international competition for ideas on redeveloping the Spanish capital’s emblematic Puerta del Sol and its surroundings. Out of 146 entries submitted, two have been awarded. The first prize goes to ‘El sol del membrillo’, by José Ignacio Linazasoro & Ricardo Sánchez, and the second to ‘No es fácil establecer cuándo debe el poeta detenerse’, by Luis Martínez Santa-María. The winners will receive 24,000 and 9,000 euros, respectively. The jury, presided by Mayor Ana Botella, decided not to give a third prize. Its 6,000 euro endowment will be shared by three mentions: ‘Los lunes en sol’ by José Manuel Calvo del Olmo, Javier de Esteban Garbayo, José Manuel de Andrés Moncayo, and Ana Sabugo Sierra; ‘Reload Sol’, by José María Sánchez García; and ‘Puerta Sol’, by Francisco Alonso de Santos. Designed with the flexibility necessary to admit changing uses, the winning project eliminates and repositions elements to de-clutter the plaza and make it, again, a space characterized by free space and clarity, with commercial activity pushed to the ends. Parallel to the competition to reorganize ‘Kilometer Zero’, a contest for a bench to be placed on it also now has a winner: the design presented by Mauro Doncel Marchán and Maitane Díaz Prieto, a seat resembling a sign indicating the distance to different places.
