David Chipperfield to build new center for Nobel Foundation

In the competition for the Nobel Foundation’s new building in Stockholm, entries to which were at first anonymous, the ‘Nobelhuset’ design of David Chipperfield and his Berlin office, headed by Christoph Felger, has carried the day over those of the other finalists: OMA, Lacaton & Vassal, SANAA, Snøhetta, BIG, 3XN, Lundgaard & Tranberg, Meili & Peter, Johan Celsing, and Gert Wingårdh. “The jury finds the lightness and openness of the building very appealing and consistent with the Nobel Foundation’s explicit ambition to create an open and welcoming Center for the general public,” said Lars Heikensten, jury chairman and the institution’s executive director. With a brass and glass envelope, the volume rises on the edge of the Blasieholmen peninsula and opens on to the new Nobel Trädgård garden, which with the existing one of the Stockholm Nationalmuseum will form a large public space at the heart of the Swedish capital. Besides hosting the Nobel Prize’s annual awarding ceremony, the building will accommodate a museum, conference halls, a library, offices, and a restaurant.
