Nieto Sobejano: Arvo Pärt Center in Laulasmaa (Estonia)

The office of Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano has won the bid to build a new cultural center in Laulasmaa, an Estonian city located 35 kilometers from Tallin. An international competition was organized by the foundation whose mission it is to preserve and study the legacy of the national composer Arvo Pärt. Seventy-one teams vied for this commission, and some of the others shortlisted were Coop Himmelb(l)au, Henning Larsen, OFIS, and Zaha Hadid. The jury, which included the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, gave second and third prizes to the U.S. office Allied Works and the Estonian firm Kavakava, respectively. Based on the idea of preserving the surrounding pine forest, the winning design presents a sequence of public and private spaces interconnected under a large roof and meant to harbor archives, a library, workshops, offices, exhibition galleries, and an auditorium. Through the unitary structure of the roof and the variable arrangement of courtyards, the project aims for an interpretation of the void and silence, essential elements of architecture and music.
