ACXT-Idom, new Athletic Club de Bilbao stadium

Located at the edge of Bilbao’s gridded extension, looking over the estuary and almost exactly on the spot of the demolished football stadium, which with its over a hundred years of age was called “the cathedral,” the new San Mamés will go up in several phases following a design drawn up by ACXT-Idom, and the team of “the lions” will no longer have to play matches out of home. Able to take in 53,000 spectators, the bold volume is conceived as an architectural piece that respects and relates with the surrounding buildings, presenting a unique facade composed of a succession of twisted EFTE elements. A dynamic lighting system at night makes the stadium a new landmark in the Vizcayan capital, the venue, incidentally, of  UEFA Euro 2020. Covering the entire grandstand, the roof will be formed by radial metal trusses oriented towards the center of the playing field, and white ETFE cushions. The stadium project includes the Athletic Club’s official store and meeting rooms, which are already completed, and a restaurant, café, museum, and municipal sport center.
