Arquitectura-G, Casa Luz in Cilleros (Cáceres)

Luz, the owner of this one-family house in Cilleros, a municipality of the western Spanish province of Cáceres, wanted to turn a ruin of a building into a luminous home with fresh air and a kitchen garden to enjoy. This determined the integral renovation carried out by the Barcelona studio Arquitectura-G – Jonathan Arnabat, Jordi Ayala-Bril, Aitor Fuentes, and Igor Urdampilleta. With a built area of 136 square meters, an elongated floor plan, and a narrow bay, the new dwelling preserves the rough stone facades and the mud walls of the preexisting building. That the central area of the house had neither light nor ventilation, added to a low budget, led the authors to adopt a simple project strategy: to empty and clean up the interior completely. Four tiered slabs surround the courtyard, conditioned by the facade’s old openings. Each tray accommodates a single use: kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms, each with its own bath. In the upper levels, the trays stretch into the courtyard in the form of a metal mesh walkway. Covered with red Catalan floor tiles, the ground level includes a sunroom that opens out to the courtyard, which shelters a beech tree, and also to the kitchen garden at the rear of the house. The sunroom will also be a cool spot for a summer siesta.
