Mario Corea, Luis Morán, and Sebastián Guerrico are the authors of this new library in Girona which with its 8,072 square meters is the largest in Catalonia’s network of public libraries. To differentiate the building amid the great variety of languages and materials that characterizes the urban fabric it is embedded into, the envelope of the bold square volume presents glazed pieces, mostly of white U-Glass, alternating with transparent panels. Organized around three inner courtyards, the four-story cultural facility addresses the brief’s demand for a place of social interaction alongside the reading and study rooms usual in a library. The latter occupy the upper two floors, while the private administration areas are put in the basement. Access is from the new public plaza to a ground level accommodating the children’s library and multipurpose zones.
