SOM presents a masterplan for Egypt’s new capital

The American firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) has presented the preliminary design for the planning of The Capital Cairo, a 700-square-kilometer development in the desert, 45 kilometers east of Cairo, which is to be Egypt’s new administrative and financial metropolis. With the idea of decongesting the current capital – suffocating in pollution, overcrowded (with the population aof18 million expected to double by 2050), brimming with traffic, and abounding in illegal constructions – the new sustainable city will have a compact urban structure with districts for business, government administration, culture, and innovation, besides a hundred residential neighborhoods for over 7 million people, following a scheme inspired in some of the developments within Cairo’s existing urban fabric. Building it will cost some 45,000 million dollars coming from private investments, and there will be extensive green zones, including what is set to be one of the world’s largest urban parks, as well as an airport, 2,000 schools, and 600 health centers.
