The project by the Rotterdam firm MVRDV has been announced the winner of the competition for a Cultural Cluster at the heart of the Dutch municipality of Zaanstad, 9 kilometers from the core of Amsterdam. A reinterpretation of the stack of dwellings that forms the facade of Hotel Inntel nearby, the design is conceived as a grouping of volumes – inspired in the shapes of the Zaan region’s traditional houses – whose varied and differently colored silhouettes are cut out on the envelope of the cubic building. Containing a total area of 7,500 square meters and set on a raised pedestrian square, the complex is to accommodate a film house, a library, a performance and visual arts center, a pop music center, and a local radio station. The program’s various elements are interconnected and arranged around a central space. The interiors are clad with the green wood that characterizes Zaan’s historical houses.
