RSHP wins competition for Terminal 3 at Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan

Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has won first prize in the competition to build the new terminal of Taoyuan, which, located 40 kilometers from Taipei, is Taiwan’s largest international airport. The jury has also distinguished the proposals of UN Studio and Foster + Partners with second and third prizes, respectively. Drawn up in collaboration with the local firm Fei Cheng and the engineers of Arup and CECI, the British practice RSHP’s winning design for the airport enlargement synthesizes its experience in terminal 5 at Heathrow and terminal 4 at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas. Able to serve 45 million passengers a year, the new building will combine a roof resembling that of the London intervention with the warm spaces – beneath undulating ceilings – of the extension of the Madrid facilities, a project undertaken with Estudio Lamela. Terminal 3 at Taoyuan is expected to be ready in 2020.
