Vector Architects, Chongqing Taoyuanju Community Center

Hidden in the slope of a mountain, this 10,000-square-meter complex blends into the hilly topography of Taoyuan Park, in the Chinese municipality of Chongqing. The project of the Beijing firm Gong Dong (Vector Architects) comprises three constructions, each one independently housing one part of the tripartite program: athletic center, cultural center, public health center. The fusion of landscape and architecture is effected through continuous roofs, which are pitched and adapted to the wavy terrain. In the same way, the grass that wraps the complex – enhancing its thermal efficiency – merges the buildings with the natural environment. Finally, in the manner of skylights, the rectangular and circular openings in the concrete are pierced by trees, further blurring the limits between interior and exterior.
